Google have just launch their new Google Places app for the iPhone and iPod touch.
The app allows you to find businesses and places based on where you are and adds the social value of being able to rate and share your experiences of dealing with this business. They are taking on competitors like Yelp, Foursquare and you would have to say the Yellow Pages. Google Places iPhone app has nine default searches for the most common businesses like finding local Restaurants, Coffee, ATM or Attractions. You can also add your own searches. Just click the + and you could for instance type in "Website design" and it will create an icon for you so you can always find the local website design companies. I can see this being a great tool for the traveling sales person.
Businesses are going to have to up their game to protect their online reputation which is great for the consumer.
A browser version of Google Places is also online at http://google.com/hotpot. Google Places for iOS is free and can be downloaded from the iTunes App store and requires an iPhone or iPod touch running iOS 3.0 or later.
It is great to see Google continuing to develop for the iPhone.
